2.00: Opening of meeting and introduction

2.15: Anaphylaxis - Recognition and Management

  • The recognition of anaphylaxis, careful observation of patients after any test etc which could provoke anaphylaxis, ready availability of adrenaline.
  • Standard routines for resuscitation.
  • Equipment for resuscitation.

3.15: Basic Immunology - lightning review.

  • History of immunology, types of reaction, cells, antibodies and complement involved, the physiology of the immune response, mediators, definition of allergy, differentiation of allergy from pseudoallergy, antiallergy drugs and their actions.

3.45: Tea

4.00: Type A and Type B reactions

  • Immediate allergic reactions dependant on IgE.
  • Other types of allergic reactions (termed Type B) and evidence for their allergic nature.
  • The natural history of Type B reactions, masking, withdrawal, timing, objective evidence.
  • Effect of avoidance and of desensitisation.

4.40: Prick and patch tests, followed by a practical demonstration.

  • The usefulness, and use, of prick and patch tests.
  • Use in eczema.
  • Correlation with each other and with IgE and challenge testing.
  • Practical instruction and demonstration.
  • Note: A "hands on" practical experience of prick and patch testing will follow at the end of the meeting for those who wish to take part.
