Module 1: Emergencies

The National Minimum Standards for Independent Health Care (HMSO 2002) stipulates:

  • C27.3 There is a member of staff on duty at all times trained in basic resuscitation techniques with up-date training on an annual basis.

Proof of attendance at this or an equivalent course is likely to be required by the Healthcare Commission, and in due course by the GMC. This module will soon become a mandatory element of our clinical governance.

9.30 Guarding against and Managing Allergic Emergencies John Collard RGN

  • Coping with anaphylaxis and asthma.
  • Safeguarding the airway in allergic swelling.

10.30 Tea

10.45-12.30 Resuscitation John Collard RGN

  • CPR and defibrillation.
  • A practical session with assessment/certification on resuscitation.

Module 2B: Allergies

2.00 Classical Allergy Harry Morrow-Brown

  • Pollens, dusts and mites, animals, fungi, bacteria and viruses.

3.30 Tea

4.00 Testing for Allergies Dr David Freed

  • Prick and Patch tests - practical instruction and demonstration.

4.45 Laboratory Tests of Immune Function Dr Rajendra Sharma

  • Using the lab to assess Th1, Th2, Th3 and immune acitivation levels.

5.30 Close

6.00 Evening meal

  • Please indicate on registration form if you do not require evening meal. This is a good opportunity to socialise and discuss the days events whilst enjoying a good organic supper.

  • Basic physiology of immunity.

11.30 Nutritional Modulation of Immune Function (TBC) Dr Traj Nibber

  • Using foods, nutritional supplements and phytochemicals to modify and optimise immune activity.

12.30 Avian Flu: The ANH Report Dr Damien Downing

  • Influenza, pneumonia and cytokine storm.
  • The evidence for & against nutrients and phytochemicals.

Module 2C: Desensitisation

2.00 Enzyme Potentiated Desensitisation Dr Len McEwen

  • Introduction to EPD.
  • Applicability and Patient Selection.
  • The Published Data.

3.00 Neutralisation Dr John Mansfield

  • Serial Dilution Techniques.
  • Principles and Basic Practice.

4.00 Tea

4.15 Group Discussion, Feedback, Case Histories All present

  • All interesting/difficult case presentations welcome.
